Why use a smart thermostat?

With the current energy price crisis, it is really important to have full control over your heating. With built-in Frost Protection, plus instant alerts if you’ve gone out and left the heating on, it works in the background to prevent problems and save you up to £215 per year1

What is a smart thermostat?

Smart heating is a thermostat that allows you to control and customise your heating remotely from your smartphone, tablet or computer. If you’ve got a hot water tank you can control that too using a smart thermostat giving you complete control over your heating whether you are at home or out and about.

How do smart thermostats work?

A smart thermostat aims to save energy by increasing and decreasing the temperature in your home as quickly as possible. Hive can learn how your home heats up, and can then automatically adjust your schedules to pre-heat your home so that it’s at the right temperature when you want it. By reducing boiler usage, you could save money with a smart thermostat.

What are the benefits of smart thermostats?

  • They’re easy and convenient to use so you’ll never have that “is the heating still on” moment again when you’re out
  • You can tell your smart thermostat when you’re going on holiday so it can pause your normal schedules but automatically resume them when you get home – or you could set a special holiday schedule while you’re away
  • Smart heating can be personalised to your home – you can set a different schedule every day easily from the Hive app
  • For winter weekend lie-ins, you can turn up the heating without needing to get out of bed
  • If your smart thermostat has Geolocation alerts, it can recognise when you’re home or when you’re away – you could set your thermostat to turn the heating on when you’re on your commute home!

Can smart thermostats help me save money?

Yes – you can manage your energy efficiency a lot more easily with smart heating, learn about your energy usage and assess where you can cut down. You can also turn your heating on or off from anywhere so you never have to heat an empty home.

What do I need to get started?

You’ll need a smart thermostat, a receiver which connects to your boiler, a hub which connects to your smart thermostat and your WiFi, and an app you can download to your smartphone. We’d recommend getting a smart thermostat installed by a professional and at Hive we can offer professional installation with a British Gas engineer or accredited Hive Pro installer.

The easiest way to get started is with the Hive Thermostat which includes our award-winning smart thermostat, the Hive Hub to let you control the thermostat from the app, and the Hive receiver to link your thermostat to your boiler.

Do Hive thermostats work with Alexa and Google Home?

Yes – Hive thermostats work with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. So, if your hands are full and you can’t tap the app, just say “Alexa, turn the heating off”. Even better, anyone in your family can do it.
